The Portuguese Revolution of April 1974 ended 48 years of dictatorship. The political evolution that followed the coup gave rise to a revolutionary process, the On-Going Revolutionary Period, which gained momentum, after March 11, 1975, opening "the path to socialism". As a side effect, the state became the owner of almost all the press. The first democratic elections took place on April 25, 1975. For the first time in almost 50 years, the press had the opportunity to do the cover in an environment of freedom of expression. However, the media were not immune to the revolutionary process and the newspapers were affected by the struggle for control of the information. The purpose of this study is a first approach in order to understand the news process and strategies to cover the electoral campaign in the press. The methodology will rely on a comparative analysis of the journalist formats in Diário de Notícas and Jornal Novo, chosen for de difference of each journalistic format and almost opposite editorial status.

Potential of duckweed for swine wastewater nutrient removal and biomass valorisation through anaerobic co-digestion

Over the last decades, phytodepuration has been considered an efficient technology to treat wastewaters. The present study reports a bench scale depuration assay of swine wastewater using Lemna minor. The highest observed growth rate obtained in swine wastewater was 3.1 ± 0.3 gDW m−2 day−1 and the highest nitrogen and phosphorus uptake were 140 mg N m−2 day−1 and 3.47 mg P m−2 day−1, respectively. The chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency in the swine wastewater assay was 58.9 ± 2.0%. Furthermore, the biomass valorisation by anaerobic co-digestion with swine wastewater was assessed. Results showed a clear improvement in specific methane production rate (around 40%) when compared to mono-substrate anaerobic digestion. The highest methane specific production, 131.0 ± 0.8 mL CH4 g−1 chemical oxygen demand, was obtained with a mixture containing 100 g of duckweed per liter of pre-treated swine wastewater. The water-nutrients-energy nexus approach showed to be promising for swine waste management.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Relationship between E-Marketing Strategy and Performance: A Conceptual Framework in a Web Context

    Get PDF
While building on the contingency theory, this paper proposes a conceptual framework that links five factors: a) internal forces, b) external forces, c) past web and firm performance, d) current web and firm performance, and e) e-marketing strategy in terms of the strategy defined for the 4Ws (Web-Design, Web-Promotion, Web-Price, and Web-CRM). Future research is encouraged to build on this framework to test how internal and external forces of the firm, along with its past performance, influence the determination of e-marketing strategy and how in turn, e-marketing strategy impacts on performance at the web and firm levels.

E-LEARNING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL) BY MEANS OF USING THE JOURNALISTIC STYLE

The journalistic style is a sociocultural phenomenon becoming more common in our reality because of the continuous exposition of media in citizens’ experience. This exposition formulates our conception, reinterpretation and construction of the world, as well as it allows us to get to know a great diversity of perspectives among one single concept. Throughout the following journalistic article, the journalistic style has been reconstructed to make students understand and learn new methods of communication regarding the linguistic and communicative norms that media possesses. Moreover, students will be able to learn the different essential features that compose the process of newspaper creation: journalistic article structuration, journalistic cohesion, advertisement production, sections that compose the journalistic piece, etc. Indeed, the aim was to teach and study the digitalization of the English language in a journalist style, thus, using the language in new formats and linguistic contexts. For this study, a group of students belonging to the second year of Secondary Education has been selected. The learning situation was initially based on the comprehension and interpretation of the journalist production of newspapers’ productions and eventually, a newspaper was created. Two major skills were developed during the learning of English as a foreign language: reading comprehension and written production. The results obtained were positive: Pupils demonstrated digital structures learning, assimilation of uses of English regarding descriptive and persuasive uses and knowledge about areas and structuration of newspapers

CLIL & INFORMAL DIGITAL EDUCATION: LEARNING CONTENTS AND LANGUAGE THROUGH STREAMING PLATFORMS

This research concentrates on the importance that digital technologies and their use in informal contexts in the process of learning of English as a communication vehicle and non-linguistic disciplines. This study aims to analyze this spontaneous learning produced by platforms usually utilized by pupils, i.e., to examine the impact that online platforms produce among students regarding the learning of the foreign language concurrently with content learning. Thus, teenagers from 12 to 16 years old who are currently studying Secondary Education have been selected. These students belong to the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) programme. The policy instrument employed was a survey in which pupils shall reflect on how these mediums have contributed simultaneously to the ESL and content learning in this non- formal context. This investigation will contribute to connect formal and informal education, study those aspects which are mainly potentiated when pupils are not at school (in an attempt to introduce them in class and eventually motivate students) and make pupils reflect on their own process of learning. Keywords: CLIL, ICT, informal education, Secondary Education

Pimenta is cofinanced by national funds through the Programa Operacional do Alentejo 2007-2013 (ALENT-07-0262- FEDER-001883)This study compared the effects of a bout of maximal running exercise on arterial stiffness in children and adults. Right carotid blood pressure and artery stiffness indices measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV), compliance and distensibility coefficients, stiffness index α and β (echo-tracking), contralateral carotid blood pressure, and upper and lower limb and central/aortic PWV (applanation tonometry) were taken at rest and 10 min after a bout of maximal treadmill running in 34 children (7.38 ± 0.38 years) and 45 young adults (25.22 ± 0.91 years) having similar aerobic potential. Two-by-two repeated measures analysis of variance and analysis of covariance were used to detect differences with exercise between groups. Carotid pulse pressure (PP; η(2) = 0.394) increased more in adults after exercise (p < 0.05). Compliance (η(2) = 0.385) decreased in particular in adults and in those with high changes in distending pressure, similarly to stiffness index α and β. Carotid PWV increased more in adults and was related to local changes in PP but not mean arterial pressure (MAP). Stiffness in the lower limbs decreased (η(2) = 0.115) but apparently only in those with small MAP changes (η(2) = 0.111). No significant exercise or group interaction effects were found when variables were adjusted to height. An acute bout of maximal exercise can alter arterial stiffness and hemodynamics in the carotid artery and within the active muscle beds. Arterial stiffness and hemodynamic response to metabolic demands during exercise in children simply reflect their smaller body size and may not indicate a particular physiological difference compared with adults.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
